Join us for a private guided tour of Kreeger Museum's permanent collection of 19th and 20th century paintings and sculptures to discover one of the world's preeminent collections of impressionist art. Highlights of the collection include works by Monet, van Gogh, Picasso, Renoir, Cezanne, Chagall, Rodin, Miro, Moore, Kandinsky, Ardon and Washington artists Gene Davis, Sam Gilliam, William Christenberry and Kendall Buster as well as examples of traditional African and Asian Art.
This is also a great opportunity to meet other ICDC members who appreciate art. Our art gallery and museum tours one of our most popular events and frequently sell out well in advance. Please reserve your tickets early, as capacity is limited.
You will be able to discover work of Impressionists, which are represented by nine Monet paintings, as well as works by Renoir, Sisley, and Pissarro. Other 20th century European artists include Edvard Munch, Max Beckmann, Wassily Kandinsky, and Joan Miró. The American artists are introduced by the graceful motion of an Alexander Calder mobile. The permanent collection also includes a collection of traditional works of art from west and central Africa. There are also a few Indian and Pre-Colombian pieces.
The Kreeger Museum is a modern building that has a timeless quality. American architect Philip Johnson, with Richard Foster, accomplished this by making obvious references to the past and combining those with a modernist vocabulary. Johnson and Foster were challenged to create a structure that could serve as a residence, a museum and a recital hall. The modern building that they designed not only fulfills these functions, but with a classical style. To achieve this, Johnson and Foster blended modern features with historic quotes. For example, the domes of the structure allude to Byzantine monuments like the Hagia Sophia. As you move through the building, you will notice transitions from small to large spaces. This was inspired by Egyptian tombs. The use of the module, the 22 foot cube that is the basis of the building, dates back to Roman architecture. (The Great Hall, for example, is three modules long.) The result of these historical references is a structure that seems timeless.
